The dhimmi are the non-Muslim minority who lived in the many Islamic societies since the founding and expansion of Islam. While Islam maintains that the protection of the dhimmi under the dhimmi system shows the tolerance of Islam, Christianity contends that the dhimmi system discriminates against the dhimmi. Under the dhimmi system, the discrimination of the jizya and kharaj, pressure to convert to Islam, and persecution were evident. In Indonesia, which has the largest Muslim population in the world, Christianity is a minority, and the discrimination and persecution against Indonesian Christianity has parallels to the situation of the dhimmi in past Islamic states. That the Indonesian church survived the discrimination and restrictions that came with being dhimmi and kept the faith is a sign of the kingdom of God, and the missional presence of the Indonesian church exemplifies mission. Furthermore, mission as dialogue is a missional method that goes beyond the missional presence of the Indonesian church toward Islam. Through dialogue and encounters that focus on common interests and seek peaceful coexistence with moderate Indonesian Muslims, the Indonesian church can witness to Christ.
