The purpose of this study is to clarify the structure of “compassion fatigue” among the staff of a residential children’s home and to refine it from the viewpoint of support for caregivers. We focused on the compassion fatigue of the staff responsible for the care of abused children living in a residential children’s home and considered it from the perspective of staff support. An interview survey was conducted, and qualitative data analysis was performed. The results of the analysis clarified two types of compassion fatigue, namely, stress-based “stress-dominant” and depression-based “depression-dominant,” in the conventional trauma-centered research on sympathy fatigue. We examined the factors and countermeasures that can be considered for each type of compassion fatigue. We suggest that providing support tailored to the type of compassion fatigue and supporting the staff through active staff monitoring as an organization, rather than relying on the quality of each staff member as desirable support, are necessary. Such support will lead to better support for children.
