Snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) is found in the East Sea to the Bering Sea, Alaska, Greenland, and the Barents Sea. They prefer cold water temperatures and occur at depths from 20 to 2,000 m on sandy or muddy bottoms. C. opilio is one of the major commercial species in Republic of Korea, and the Hupo basin of the East Sea is one of the most important fishing grounds. C. opilio mainly inhabit depths of 200 to 400 m in the East Sea, but not in the Hupo basin due to the topographic characteristics: the basin gradually deepens from the west, where is the eastern coast of Korea, to the east, up to 200 m, and it is bounded by the Hupo bank.
