Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease worldwide that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (T1DM) or when the body cannot effectively utilize the insulin (T2DM) that it produces. Streptozotocin (STZ) is glucosamine–nitrosourea compound that is widely used as single high or multiple low-doses (intraperitoneal and intravenous) of diabetic induction followed by pancreatic β cells destruction in clinical studies. Multiple low-dose STZ administration promotes insulitis over a long period and resulted macrophages infiltration to the pancreas islet, and cytokine-dependent T1DM development. However, multiple intraperitoneal doses on zebrafish imply high mortality via stress, cytotoxicity, and pathogenic infection.
