Objective: This study aims to apply a systemic method, which is called Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM), to analyze accidents in the shipbuilding industry. Background: Shipyard is a type of complex socio-technical systems, of which accidents need to be investigated in consideration of dynamic and various interactions among system components including human workers, organization, machines, and so on. This means that an effective accident analysis method should support analysts in investigating those aspects of accidents in a systemic manner. However, it is known that the traditional accident investigation methods have limitations to uncover those aspects. In order to complement the limitations of the traditional methods, systemic accident analysis methods have been developed. Of those, FRAM has been reported as one of the most useful systemic models. It has been claimed that FRAM can give valuable insights for supplementing the drawbacks of traditional methods and thus investigating accidents more systemically. Method: To demonstrate the usefulness of the FRAM-based accident analysis, we conducted a case study of analyzing an accident happening at the shipyard, which is the target system of this study.
