This essay explores the emergence of Renaissance female subjectivity represented in the sonnet sequence of Lady Mary Wroth. The heroine of Pamphilia to Amphilanthus (1621) is a woman of power that appears as an enthusiastic lover whose voice also implies political desire. Wroth lived in an era where a female ruled England and she also saw the rise of the belief that laity could communicate with God without cleric mediation. Women writers including Mary Wroth started to adopt secular materials which were before mainly limited to religious topics. However, the social atmosphere remaining hostile against them, a women"s desire for subjectivity had to be disguised whithin traditional motifs. In Wroth"s sonnet sequence, where the constant heroine laments the pain and hope of love, simultaneously challenges social norms via recognizing hidden aspect of life such as night. This essay argues that the nocturnal elements in Pamphilia to Amphilanthus illustrate Wroth"s urge to unveil the repressed voices of women. The theme of darkness in parallel with the blinding of the sight refers to a subject focusing on internal feelings aside from social norms. Wroth also captures this feature of darkness in Pamphilia to Amphilanthus, suggesting that the repressed wish for subjectivity intensifies and grows out of night and shades.
