Tensor like muscle between the vastus lateralis (VL) and the vastus intermedius (VI) was recently discovered and named the tensor of the vastus intermedius (TVI). The TVI muscle originates from the anteroinferior greater trochanter and inserts to the upper patella. The TVI muscle receives blood supply and innervation independently with other muscles. And the function of the TVI muscle is considered as knee extension due to its anatomical location. Since microsurgery and detailed rehabilitation treatments are developing, more research on this muscle is needed. Until now, there has never been a study described about the TVI in Korea. Here we report the anatomical characteristics of TVI via Korean cadaveric study.
A total of 23 cadavers were embalmed in a formalin-based solution and the thighs were examined using a standardized dissection protocol. The quadriceps femoris muscle was identified and the components of the muscle were defined by an anatomy specialist. All muscle bellies in the area of the VL and VI were traced from their origin to their insertion and their affiliations were determined. The TVI type was divided into ID (Independent), VI, VL and common type according to relative relationship between the TVI and the VL and VI. In ID type, the tendon of the TVI could easily be separated from both the VI and VL. In VI type, the aponeurosis of the TVI was inseparable from that of the VI. If it could be separated fro ... 전체 초록 보기
