This article reflects on the past achievements of the study of Genesis, investigates its recent studies, and proposes a direction for future study. For 200 years, the Korean Society of Old Testament Studies has examined the process of the composition of Genesis with great depth. The society has provisionally recognized its various sources. Different techniques have been derived to analyze these sources. Through literary, form, and redaction criticism, the organization has discovered that the composite process of Genesis is very complicated. Against the excessive form of historical criticism, a new trend has emerged which takes into account the reader’s position. Moreover, the reception history of the interpretation of Genesis has reached a turning point. In particular, synchronic criticisms, which attribute more importance to the relationship with the reader than the author, have been adopted. Genesis has not been the center of concern in recent studies, displaced by scholars’ focus on the study of the Pentateuch. The themes of recent studies vary widely. In future studies of Genesis, the sharp contrast between history and revelation should be harmonized, and Jewish interpretation also should be considered.
