Purpose
We evaluated the changes of body composition according to postoperative shifting of body mass index (BMI) after a distal gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer.
Methods
Body composition data using segmental multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis were obtained from 994 patients preoperatively and at 1 year after surgery. Patients were divided into three groups based on their BMI shift: Group 1, patients with a decreased more than 2 steps of BMI range compared to their preoperative BMI range; Group 2, patients with a decreased 1 step of BMI range compared to their preoperative BMI range; Group 3, patients with a maintained BMI range compared to their preoperative BMI range.
Results
There were 113 patients in Group 1, 462 in Group 2, and 419 in Group 3.
