Vibrio harvey infection occurred in river puffer (Takifugu obscurus) broodstocks cultured in a seawater farm in Chungnam province. Diseased fish had a large skin ulcer between the eyes on the head and pale liver with some brownish small spots. Two presumptive strains, MC9029SU from the skin ulcer and MC9029K from the kidney, were isolated on tryptic soy agar (TSA-2) and thiosulfate citric bile salt sucrose agar (TCBS-2) supplemented with 2% NaCl. The isolates were identified as Vibrio harveyi by biochemical characteristics, 16S rRNA gene sequencing and species-specific PCR. In experimental infection test, high mortality (80%) was confirmed in the fish intraperitonelally injected with the isolate (MC9029K) at 28‰ but not at 20‰.
