This study reports the outcomes of Japanese speaking lessons conducted based on the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach in a university. CLIL, an educational approach that was developed in Europe, aims to develop proficiency in both language and subject learning. It is characterized by learning that is planned, implemented, and evaluated in accordance with the “4Cs,” content, communication, cognition, and culture. The study analyzed the results of a questionnaire along with rubric evaluations conducted by students, with the aim of acquiring the basic knowledge that is necessary for the introduction of CLIL for Japanese language teaching at a South Korean university.
The results indicated that learners generally evaluate CLIL favorably and that there is potential for introducing CLIL in Japanese language teaching in South Korea. However, learners did not perceive that their speaking skills had developed significantly, and one reason for this was that the learning themes were too difficult for learners. In the future, I hope to clarify the specific aspects that need to be improved, from the perspectives of teaching and evaluation methods, etc. after considering the characteristic circumstances of South Korea.
