A novel methanotroph, isolated from the rice paddy field soil, was identified as Methylocystis sp. JR2 by 16srDNA gene sequencing. The strain produced a pink pigment in the NMS medium containing low phosphate concentration (≤0.1mM). Maximal absorption peaks and color of the pigment were changed by the solvents and pHs. Pigment was purified and analyzed by LC-MS/MS with m/z 338.7, 352.6 and 366.7. These values were the typical characteristics of the prodigiosin analogues consisting of 2-methyl-3-hexyl, 2-methyl-3-heptyl and 2-methyl-3-octyl prodiginine, respectively.
