Metalloproteins exhibit a wide range of electrochemical and redox properties depending on the internal structure surrounding the metal atom(s). Such properties are employed in a wide range of activities, from promoting various oxidation and reduction reactions to carrying out electron transfer inside cells. Among metalloproteins, ferredoxin is a metalloprotein that mediates electron transport across multiple organisms in cells. Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 ferredoxin (SynFd), which is mutated in this study, participates in the energy generation mechanism within photosynthesis by helping the regeneration of NADPH.
