The purpose of the study is to help Korean EFL students enhance their cross-cultural awareness of British Christmas culture. Five American native speakers (ANS) were asked to apply their own perspectives to the British Christmas traditions shown in the movie Love Actually. They gave the answers for the three research questions: 1) the differences in Christmas traditions between the U.K. and the U.S.A.; 2) any other notable Christmas traditions that are not seen in the movie; 3) any British English expressions. They have found that British Christmas traditions are different from America in the following ways: 1) carols are sung less and carolers are not seen as much as in America; 2) Christmas decorations are fewer and not elaborate in the U.K.; 3) the Christmas parties in the British company are rather plain compared to those in America; 4) A Christmas No. 1 song competition is held in the U.K. but not in America; 5) social atmospheres of the British Christmas appear more or less secular. They have also mentioned some notable British Christmas traditions including Boxing Day, crackers, stockings, and pantomimes. They have found some Christmas-related British English specific words like Father Christmas, Happy Christmas, and Chrimbo. Other British English expressions are not known to ANS or considered to be taboo. Finally, since movies seek to provide dramatic effects for movie viewers, EFL teachers should be well prepared to guide their students to have more accurate information about the target culture.
