In the late Joseon period, a typical style of Buddhist painting was established. These Buddhist paintings were given eternal vitality by hanging a Bokjangnang(ensouling pouch) filled with a spirit container on top of the painting. Many of the relics of Bokjangnang are concentrated in the 18th century. Among them, Namjangsa Temple"s Bokjangnang, which is known to have been made in 1783, is an artifact of a noteworthy for its size, conservation condition, composition and decorating. This study investigates the process of the 18th century Bokjangnang production and the meaning of each composition while conducting a survey of the unsealing Bokjangnang of Namjangsa Temple in Sangju. The Bokjangnang, which consists of a red string, a pouch cover, a pouch, and a Goebul, is organically connected to eventually complete the Jeoman ritual. The manufacture process consists of the following steps: production of Bokjangnang`s pouch and its cover → connection of a string → decoration of a triangle ornament called Goebul → recording of Sanskrit scripts and mantras → filling with the spirit container and votive offerings. There are Sanskrit scripts and mantras in the center of Bokjangnang, which symbolizes the Buddhist painting, and the use of pure gold in the records of its commemoration for the ritual. In addition, the textile for Bokjangnang is a contrast between red and blue, and silk satin damask with cloud and treasure pattern were used for Uigwe or royal investiture books cover fabrics of Joseon dynasty. This type of Bokjangnang is disappeared in the 19th century, and although the pouch cover is changed like a lotus flower and long bands hung under the pouch, the basic composition and symbolism of the Bokjangnang are maintained.
