The purpose of this study is to evaluate user’s attitudes and thoughts on the three types of vernacular dwellings, and to derive the implications of modern local housing. This was conducted from June to October 2020 to 270 their residents by an online survey method. They are residents from 10 villages, located in western Henan of China, of which 150 residents from pit kiln village, 60 residents from independent cave-dwelling village, and 60 residents from masonry building village. The evaluation contents were measured on a five-point Likert scale for comfort, health or hygiene, physical fuction(safety, space), convenience(access to living facilities), and social aspect(sociality·security).
The background of residents and their houses can be shown that the ratios of male and female are 53.3% and 46.7%, which means that the proportion of men and women surveyed is roughly equal. In terms of age, people aged 41-60 are the most, followed by those aged 22-40. Farmers (52.6%) are the most occupations. The number of households is 3-5 persons (75.6%) the most, and the tenure type is private property(95.9%) the most. The household income between 2001-3500RMB is the most (34.%), Good(42.9%) is the highest proportion of health status, Qing Dynasty (1644-1910)(56.3%) is the highest proportion of building construction period. 151-250m<sup>2</sup> (35.2%) is the highest proportion of building size. Evaluation results are as follow.
First, the residential environment evaluation of indigenous residents was Indoor Environment Comfort (3.44), Hygiene (3.05), Physical Function (3.44), Convenience (2.97), Social Aspect (3.83), and overall, it was above fair condition.
