The Dogs and Pigs are used as medium or large size experimental animals in Korea. There are approximately 50 experimental animal supplying companies in Korea. The dogs and pigs account for 14% out of whole experimental animals. In 2017, 2,943 dogs and 1,783 pigs were used for animal experiment.
As the pigs are the candidates for xenotransplantation source animals, miniature pigs for xenotransplantation are related to various immune suppressors which are used for human immune suppression. The Organ transplantation is the only cure for patients with organ function failure, but the number of donors and supply is insufficient compared with that of recipients and their needs. Because of these situations, research for xenotransplantation is being conducted.
Additionally, pigs have very similar insulin sequence compared to human.
