This article discusses an aspect of the translation and vocabulary of GukminSohakDokbon that I found while I was building up sentence aligned parallel corpora out of GukminSohakDokbon and Japan’s Koto Shogaku Tokuhon, which is the original text of it.
First, I presented units to correct based on sentence-wise comparisons because there were some errors found in the suggested corresponding units of Koto Shogaku Tokuhon proposed by prior studies. Regarding the selection and organization of the topics, I was able to confirm that Koto Shogaku Tokuhon’s contents of subjects were relatively systematically covered compared to other textbooks, as a result of comparing other textbooks that were published at the same time as Koto Shogaku Tokuhon. Next, the correspondence ratio between the sentences of the source and target texts was 82.9% at average, which is relatively high, and the ratio of same forms in sino-Japanese/Korean words was 51.5%, which is also high. This is presumed to have been the result of the word-for-word translation of the original text. It was revealed that the sentence correspondence ratios of the units were approximately in proportion of their same form ratios, and in relation to this, it was also discovered that new sino-Japanese/Korean words has formed a mixed-use and competition relation.
