A Banquet for the Elderly which was one of major event of the nation in Joseon Dynasty period is a banquet hosted by the king having a meaning of honor, respect and extending a favor to the senior citizens without arguing over social status, and there is a meaning to recommend filial piety giving service to old people by providing wine and dine, and in addition, it is a place of national unity enjoying as one from the king to the lowest class.
To serve parents with putting true heart was called as “filial piety” and to serve king with putting true heart was called as “loyalty” in dynasty era, so finally, it means loyalty and filial piety is one, so there is an effect to force loyal implicitly to retainers.
Though Confucianism is the national policy of Joseon Dynasty, and filial piety which was not mentioned directly in the three fundamental principles and the five moral disciplines in human relations, however, filial piety should be recognized as the root of our national spiritual culture and best value continued from ancient times which is not Confucian virtues.
Not only economic problem relevant with productivity but also family oriented and social problems due to increase of supporting population can be occurred in aging society. Negative social problem is occurred in cut off the relationship between generations due to sudden increasing of individual residence of old people based on de-familialization and nuclear familialization of old people collapsing of traditional large family system because of rapid change of the time.
A Banquet for the Elderly in Joseon Dynasty can be considered as an alternative which can create various cultural value by reusing it as new cultural performance contents can solve relationship problems between generations in modern times entering as super-aged society by showing and expanding to the audiences creating A Banquet for the Elderly as a new paradigm based on elderly filial piety used as an important value in governing tool of national management in dynastic country.
