In this paper the author argues that Peter L. Berger’s change in approaching religion from what is theoretical to what is experiential is caused by his rediscovery of the essence of religion the process of modernization could not weaken – which is by nature personal and experiential, not communal and theoretical. To support the argument, first the author examines Berger’s theory of social construction, bringing into focus the dialectical and conflictual relationship between humans and society – humans construct society and, in return, society constructs humans. Second, the author explains how Berger speculated that modernization, along with relativization and pluralization, would place religion on the verge of extinction in history. Third and last, the author brings into focus how Berger reemphasized the important role of religion as the ‘still’ workable plausibility structure in the post/modernistic society by changing his view on religion from theoretical to experiential.
