The main argument of the article is that every society has the potential to become a society like the Third Reich. To support the argument, the author relies three disciplines – Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s sociology of religion, Heinz Kohut’s self-psychology, Stanely Milgram’s socio-psychological theory of obedience. Berger and Luckmann would help understand that the Third Reich was a society (or reality in their terms) its members co-created with mutual agreement validated by their religion, National Socialism. Heinz Kohut would help analyze the psychological relationship between Hitler and the Germans that temporarily soothed their fragmented self-structure by tragic national events such as the defeat of World War II and the Treaty of Versailles. Stanely Milgram would help makes sense how the majority of the Germans blindly obeyed their leader whose self-struture was fragile enough to be pathological. A combinational research of those three disciplines leads us to the striking truth that the Third Reich is not really different from our societies – even in our society the seed of the ‘Fourth’ Reich is latent.
