On September 30, 2020 Russia and Korea marked the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Since 1990, the two countries have walked a long road from a zero-level cooperation to a diverse partnership. Bilateral trade surpassed $25 bln, there are large investment projects of Korean business in Russia, and negotiations about a preferential trade agreement were launched. While these are all obvious achievements, bilateral economic cooperation has experienced certain difficulties. Some of those difficulties are related to the internal dynamics and specific characteristics of bilateral economic relations while others are linked to global challenges. Since both Russia and Korea are active members of international community, they will have to address those challenges and prepare bi-lateral cooperation to face them.
As two countries are celebrating the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, this paper attempts to identify patterns of economic development that evolved over past three decades and tries to re-connect them with global trends in order to discuss possible future trajectories for bilateral relations. It argues that FTA provides an optimal framework for cooperation as it not only unlocks opportunities for growth but also allows to bring into cooperation diverse actors. In addition, FTA creates more predictable regulatory environment for businesses.
