Objective: To examine social distancing changes over time (January 3 to February 6, 2020), we compared social distancing in high-risk and low-risk countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Study design: The study design used in the study is a longitudinal study.
Methods: We utilized information on the number of confirmed cases and social distancing from the WHO and the Google Community Mobility Reports, respectively. We examined changes in social distancing over time and differences in social distancing between high- and low-risk countries using paired-sample t-tests, one-way repeated-measure analysis of variance (ANOVA), and two-way repeated measures ANOVA.
Results: The overall social distancing increased until Time 4, and then decreased afterwards regardless of the extent of the contagion risk in both groups of countries. The countries with a high risk of COVID-19 infections had greater social distancing compared to that of the countries with low risk. Both time and differences between the two groups were statistically significant to social distancing in recreational spaces, restaurants, transit stations, workplaces, and residential areas.
Conclusion: Social distancing is influenced not only by disease factors, but also by the social context. In addition, social distancing could be influenced by government actions, so each country should implement appropriate prophylactic methods for various social contexts.
