Andrew X. Pham, Vietnamese American writer, is often discussed with his attempt to integrate his two identities in one Asian male body in Catfish and Mandala. Using the symbol of two-wheeled cycle which obviously stands for Vietnam and America, as many critics mention, he believes that he can mark his two different identities in his own body. However, slightly moving from this perspective, this paper aims to explore the author’s desire to establish the sense of belonging in America rather than Vietnam in that America is the only nation where he can permanently stay. While Andrew’s journey to Vietnam seems to be the possible process to rediscover his ethnic identity as Vietnamese, this event rather leads him to the fact that his old nation no longer accepts the Viet-Kiu who flees to America during the Vietnamese war. Experiencing tension and conflict with a few Vietnamese in Saigon and Hanoi, he realizes that he is no longer a Vietnamese or cannot be Vietnamese American. Deciding to return to America, he accepts to struggle with finding his home not in Vietnam but America, his permanent nation in way to fix his identity as American.
