2000년 경기도 연천지역의 만삼(Codonopsis pilosula) 재배포장에서 시들음 증상을 나타내는 만삼의 뿌리로부터 Pythium sp.를 분리하였고, 다양한 균학적 특성을 조사한 결과 Pythium myriotylum으로 동정되었다. 병원성검정을 위하여 pot에 식재된 만삼의 뿌리에 분리 균을 접종한 결과 강한 병원성을 나타냈고, 포장에서 나타난 특징적인 증상과 유사한 뿌리썩음에 의한 시들음 증상을 나타냈다. 만삼에서 P. myriotylum에 의한 병은 아직 국내에 보고된 바 없어 P. myriotylum에 의한 만삼 뿌리썩음병을 최초로 보고한다.
