This study discovered the most effective wave formation and minimum hair damage at an intermediate treatment of 5% tartaric acid solution. For analysis, hair was divided into two groups: an experimental group (hair wound and intermediately treated with 5% tartaric acid solution), and a control group (hair treated with distilled water in the same amount). In terms of wave formation after perming, the experimental group was found to be 4.8% greater than the control group. In terms of hair length after hair was shampooed 30 times, the experimental group was shorter than the control group by 5.6%. In other words, the former showed better wave formation and persistence. In terms of tensile strength, the experimental group (6.678±0.089 kgf) was higher than the control group (5.888±0.108 kgf) by 13% (p<.001). Regarding elongation, the experimental group (43.16±0.86 mm) was greater than the control group (41.93±0.76 mm) by nearly 3% (p<.05). In terms of the degree of hair damage after perming, which was measured using the methylene blue dye test, the control group was 2.7 times higher than the experimental group (p<.001). The FE-SEM results found that the surface was more solid, and the cuticle was thinner in the experimental group. The cross-sectional images also reveal smooth, clean cuticles. The above results confirmed that tartaric acid solution treated with an intermediate agent keeps a permanent wave relatively intact until the 30th shampooing through covalent and non-covalent bonding. Therefore, it appears to be reasonable to use tartaric acid as an intermediate agent during the perming process.
