The purpose of this study is to examine the meanings of two similar passages in totally different texts, Ecclesiastes and 「Zhuangzi」, and then to create a new interpretation based on the common concepts found, that is, an interpretation of the book of Ecclesiastes in terms of the concepts of 「Zhuangzi」. First, taking the meaning of 「Yangshengzhu, 1-2」 in 「Zhuangzi」, into consideration, a new interpretation of Ecclesiastes 7:15-18 is proceeded.
For a human being to live a true life, 「Yangshengzhu, 1-2」 warns against his/her being captivated by their ‘limitations of knowledge’ (Chengxin), and encourages him/her to live according to ‘Du’. This is in the state of following ‘Dao’, not leaning to one side, good or evil, thus not absoluteizing it, but ‘following the laws of nature’. Rereading Ecclesiastes 7:15-18 through the lens of 「Yangshengzhu, 1-2」 in 「Zhuangzi」, the possibility is found of expressing Ecclesiastes in the language of 「Zhuangzi」, and new interpretations are also found. The unreasonable reality in Ecclesiastes could be interpreted as ‘the reality of no limit’ of 「Zhuangzi」, and the concept of ‘the fear of God’, as the concept of ‘Yuandu,’ and this added an oriental concept to the text of Ecclesiastes, which gives ample meanings to it. Also, when reading the book of Ecclesiastes in terms of the concept of ‘Chengxin’, an interpretation is found that Ecclesiastes is wary of the absoluteness of humanity, and the story of 「Zhuangzi」 about the result of ‘Yuandu’ also revealed.
The attempts of this study to read the Hebrew Bible, a religious scripture of the Hebrews, in the concept of ‘Daojia’ could give a new direction to the interpretation of Ecclesiastes that has been carried out only in the Western perspective. So this would be the opportunity to build a new foundation for sermons which are more empathetic for Asians.
