The purpose of this paper is to probe whether classifiers in Korean can influence the way its speakers categorize real world referents. Korean is a classifier language that mandates the use of classifiers when counting. Three sets of survey asking the participants to categorize objects were administered to a group of university students in Korea. The first set involved singular objects, while the other two sets involved multiple appearance of the same objects to activate classifiers for counting. The only difference between the second and the third set was that a pretest requiring the participants to write the result of their counting and calculation was administered in the third set. The results suggest that categorization of the second and third group was influenced by the classifiers they used when counting in the Korean language. Significant additional influence of the pretest in the third set was not found, but there is at least one participant demonstrating the effect. The results can be accounted for in terms of the potential competition between the semantic association among objects in the real world and common properties that allow objects to share a classifier.
