This study aims to examine Aristotle's conception of law and his theory of the rule of law expressed in his writings such as Nicomachean Ethics, Politics, and The Art of Rhetoric. In Aristotle's legal philosophy, law and the rule of law are of great significance, especially in relation to his theory of justice and constitution.Aristotle defines law as a general and rational norm based on the acceptance and agreement of the people or lawmaker. According to him, the ultimate end of mankind is happiness, and justice as the whole virtue is the essential condition of happiness. Law is intended to create and preserve the necessary conditions of happiness. Therefore the rule of law is needed to secure the happiness of the members of the political community. The rule of law is essentially equivalent to the rule by reason, while the rule of decrees is the rule by desire. Just as reason must rule desire, law must have sovereignty all over the members of the political community. The rule of law consists in internalizing the respect for law and habituating the observance of law. Law as a means of moral education resorts to persuasion and coercion in order to perform its proper role.
