South Korea now stands at the crossroads of prosperity and stagnation while the international and domestic challenges are enormous. In order to take the right path, South Korea needs a new paradigm for the nation and society.The new paradigm should emphasize the strengthening of national competitiveness s its core strategy and set the attainment of $30,000 per capita GNP by year 2015 as its major goal. We can call this “Third Leap Forward” if the industrialization in the 1960s and the democratization in the 1980s are the first and the second leap forward.The completion of the third leap forward needs the active tackling and promotion of globalization, marketization, digitalization of Korean society and its industry. The successful management of these three tasks will lead us into the new era of prosperity and strength.Complementing our new paradigm, we need a new social compact which stresses “living together” among various constituents of Korean society. For regions, we should promote co-prosperity, which is based not on mechanical and artificial allocation of resources but on regional uniqueness and autonomous development. For classes, we should promote mutual understanding and compromise. For generations, we should promote mutual love and respect. The concept of living together can be further applied to the South and North Korean relationship and it can open the way for the peaceful Korean peninsula.
