It is well accepted that the frontal speech motor system is activated during speech perception. However, the functional role of this activation remains unclear. Here we test the hypothesis that the frontal motor system plays a modulatory role in speech perception under adverse perceptual conditions. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, participants judged the meaningfulness of Korean familiar/unfamiliar words under one of two speaking rate levels (normal and fast rate). Results revealed a positive relationship between neural activity and speaking rate-induced reaction time in the left inferior frontal gyrus (or Broca’s area) and premotor cortex. Also, the perception of unfamiliar words was found to elicit greater activation of speech motor system than that of familiar words. Our findings provide strong neurocognitive evidence for a greater involvement of the speech motor system with speech perception in adverse conditions. Under adverse perceptual contexts, better perceptual activity in the frontal motor system may compensate for loss of speech intelligibility that is varied by speaking rate and familiarity. Thus, this study made it clear to understand what factors are attributed to adverse conditions in speech perception.
