흑비둘기의 외부 형질의 특징을 분석한 결과 날개길이 평균 235.73±9.25㎜ (SD, range 222.5 - 248, n=11), 꼬리길이 평균 162.18±13.06㎜ (SD, range 140 - 182, n=11), 부척길이 평균 35.54±2.11㎜ (SD, range 30 - 36.2, n=11), 부리길이 평균 20.43±1.11㎜ (SD, range 18.6 - 22.1, n=11), 전체 몸길이 평균 425.27±12.00㎜ (SD, range 416 - 445, n=10), 몸무게 평균 454.28±75.24㎜ (SD, range 350 - 557, n=14)였다. 흑비둘기 아종간 외부 형질 비교에서는 날개길이는 Columba janthina janthina 아종(235.73±9.25㎜)이 Columba janthina nitens (227.24±9.25㎜)에 비해 유의미하게 긴 것으로 나타났고(p<0.05) 부척길이는 한국 아종(35.54±2.11㎜)이 일본 아종(41.80±0.83㎜)에 비해 유의미하게 짧은 것으로 분석되었다(p<0.05). 이러한 형태학적 차이는 장거리 비행능력, 섭식 서식지 환경 등 아종 간 서식환경에 따른 적응의 결과로 추정된다.
