This paper aims to clarify whether the underlying form of the compound is /XY/ or surface type /xy/ when the surface form [xy] is derived by applying the alternation α to the compound word "X+Y" boundary. In the word recognition test for infants who do not know Hangeul, the infants recognized /XY/ not /xy/ as the underlying form before the application of the alternation α. In addition, the synchronic linguistic competence of a speaker includes the ability of word formation and word analysis.
Also, if the underlying form of alteranation α is analyzed from the surface form [xy] and the underlying form /XY/ is analyzed, the alternation α applied to "/XY/ → [xy]" should be interpreted as being synchronic. This suggests that the path approaching the underlying form /XY/ from the surface form [xy] is not a single path but two coexisting paths. One is the path approaching /XY/ by analyzing the alternation α applied to "/XY/ → [xy]". The other is the path in which the pronunciation [xy] is stored together with /XY/ in the lexicon and thus approaches /XY/ from [xy] by the memorizing processing method. In the case of the compound word in the transitional process, that is, restructuring of the underlying form, we need to take into account that the two paths coexist synchronically.
