This article aims to probe the significance of Islam represented in Tamburlaine Part 1 And Part 2 by Christopher Marlowe. In particular, Marlowe focused on the “double-sided” aspect that England took a position in relationship with Islam. In Elizabethan era, Ottoman Turks had a great power in trade as well as securing extensive territory. Thus the article has an emphasis on Turkish strength from Post-Colonial viewpoint. Furthermore, it is argued that Marlowe represents England and Ottoman Empire had reciprocative commerce through the play, and Marlowe’s contradictory representation about Tamburlaine’s religious identity depends on England’s diplomatic strategy.
In Tamburlaine Part 1, Scythian Tamburlaine eliminates the threat of Persia, seizing the Persian crown. Then he defies Ottoman Sultan Bajazeth, where Marlowe distances Tamburlaine’s Islam from Bajazeth’s. Eventually Tamburlaine comes to eradicate Europe’s troublesome in the trade to the East.
In Tamburlaine Part 2, unlike Tamburlaine’s action in Tamburlaine Part 1, he puts Europe and its traffic in danger. In addition, it is not apparent if his religious identity is Islam or Christianity.
In conclusion, through the difference of Tamburlaine’s attitude to Europe from Tamburlaine Part 1 and Tamburlaine Part 2, it is estimated that Marlowe represents historical circumstances that Elizabethan attitude to Islam is likely to change and Marlowe feels the necessity of its rhetoric to justify the historical context.
