Applying Andre Bazin’s cinematic realism theory to photographic artwork, this paper will prepare an aesthetic basis for discussing the artistic values of the recent documentary photography known as ‘forme tableau.’ The focus of his realist aesthetics, influenced by Merleau-Ponty’s existential phenomenology, is to represent reality as it is, and to encourage the spectator to be an autonomous subject for the interpretation of film work. We will discover the very similar points between ways of representing reality in ‘forme tableau’ and techniques such as ‘deep focus’ and ‘long take’ in realist film works promoted by Bazin. We will also study how the photographic rhetoric of ‘forme tableau’ may be connected to the effects that reveal the ambiguity of reality in order to induce spectator participation.
