Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 10-weeks weight bearing exercise on health related fitness and vascular compliance in middle-aged women.
Method: After preliminary measurements, a total of 26 women were randomly assigned to control group (n=13) and exercise group (n=13). Exercise intensity was 1~3weeks 50~55%, 4~6weeks 60~65% and 7~10weeks 70~75%. Exercise frequency was 1 hour a day and 3 day as week for ten weeks. Control group maintained previous lifestyle. Also, body composition, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, cardiac endurance, blood pressure and vascular compliance were measured before and after 10 weeks training.
Results: The results of this study are as follows. 1) body weight (p<.01), body fat mass (p<.01) and body fat (p<.01) significantly decreased in weight bearing exercise program group, but control group showed no significant changes. 2) skeletal muscle mass (p<.001) and BMR p<.001) significantly increased in weight bearing exercise program group, but control group showed no significant changes. 3) muscular strength (p<.05), muscular endurance (p<.001), cardiac endurance (p<.001) significantly increased in weight bearing exercise program group, but control group showed no significant changes. 4) upper limb systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure showed no significant changes in weight bearing exercise program group and in control group. 5) PWV (p<.05) significantly increased in weight bearing exercise program group, but control group showed no significant changes.
Conclusion: Therefore, the weight bearing training appears to be effective for improving health-related fitness and vascular compliance in middle-aged women.
