Objective: This study was carried out to compare and analyze the characteristics of men and women regarding the recognition of tactile stimuli in young people.

Background: Reflecting the user"s tactile cognitive characteristics in tactile interface and product design is important not only for the usability of the product, but also for sensitivity satisfaction. This requires a variety of research, first of all, on the recognition of tactile stimuli. Because gender characteristics are an important consideration factor in design, it is also necessary to study them as to the recognition of tactile stimuli.

Method: Two experiments were conducted to identify gender characteristics for tactile stimuli. The first experiment was conducted in order to obtain 2-point discrimination threshold for the young people"s hand. Two-point discrimination values were measured for thumb, index finger, the second knuckles of index finger, and palm, and measurements were made twice with the top-down and bottom-up for each measuring area. 181 college students (75 males and 105 females) participated in the experiment as subjects. The second experiment was to detect surface roughness. The experiment was to determine whether the roughness of the molded plastic chip presented to the subject was the same as that of the pre-learned sample. Six a molded plastic chips are being used in the experiment and 60 college students (30 males and 30 females) participated in the experiment.

Results: As a result of the 2-point discrimination test, the 2-point discrimination threshold at the first joint of the index finger was the smallest. And male and female sensitivity to each finger region showed no significant difference except for the first joint of index finger. Signal detection theory was used to analyze the characteristics of men and women in the detection experiments of surface roughness. Sensitivity and response bias were derived for the results of surface roughness detection. The results showed that female sensitivity to surface roughness detection was superior to the male and the difference was significant at a significant level 005. On the other hand, the analysis of the response bias, which indicates the severity of the decision criteria, showed that women applied slightly stricter criteria than men, but the results showed no significant difference.

Conclusion: The index finger is the best in recognition ability for tactile stimuli, and women show superior characteristics to men. The female also have superior ability to the male in detection of surface roughness.

Application: The results can be used as basic data to study the characteristics of men and women regarding the recognition of tactile stimuli. And it can be used as a guide for tactile interface design and surface texture design.
