This study focused on the openness and meaning of the communication structure of Naebang-gasa (“Women’s lyric”) and analyzed several cases found in literary works. This can clarify the value and meaning of Naebang-gasa in terms of documentary and cultural heritage.
As mentioned previously, the records of women’s serious self-reflection found in Naebang-gasa of Gyeongbuk province are deemed as a highly significant documentary and cultural heritage in that, although women were in the position of socially underprivileged, they tried to communicate with themselves through words. The direction of such communication is also significant in that, while women were reading Naebang-gasa together and sympathizing, comforting, and solidifyingeach other, it provided a possibility for the direction of communication to spread to the outside world or to other people. Women shared the pain or joy of other people in the process of enjoying Naebang-gasa through which they expressed pain, frustration, and hope in their lives in their native language. Several materials confirmed that this process of emotional sympathy was an opportunity to promote a voluntary and sustainable documentary culture.
Naebang-gasa of the late Joseon dynasty shows women’s eagerness for recording their lives, their sincere mind to sympathize with the feelings of other people, and their efforts to express such mind aesthetically through words that they learned. In this sense, the Naebang-gasa of the late Joseon dynasty is deemed as a valuable cultural heritage in terms of women’s culture and local culture. Therefore, it is necessary to further embody the universal value of Naebang-gasa that can be recognized as a world documentary and cultural heritage in order to solve the problems of the current discontinuity and the succession of the value.
