About 53% of all rental houses in Korea are permanent rental houses for low-income households. Residents of rental houses are mostly elderly or socially vulnerable and spent most of their time at home. Also, they are exposed to thermal unpleasant environments. However, the analysis of thermal environment for the rental houses is little. In this study, long-term measurement for indoor thermal environment of the rental houses was accomplished in winter in Korea. Indoor temperature and humidity of the rental houses were measured for two months. Total 17 households (approximately 21.78㎡) of new and existing permanent rental houses in Sungnam were analyzed.
The measurement results are as follows; (1) The insulation performance of both new construction and existing rental houses showed somewhat poorer performance. (2) The airtightness of the existing rental houses was about 0.425ACH, which is relatively tightened. In case of the new construction, the airtightness was about 0.415ACH when the natural ventilation unit is opened. While 0.1ACH in a condition that the natural ventilation unit is closed. (3) Indoor temperature of the newly constructed households remained higher than 23℃, which is the average indoor temperature of private apartment house in Korea. However, most of the existing households remained lower than 23℃. (4) All the households supported by the Energy Voucher were in a state of thermal comfort. While the households were not provided with an Energy Voucher were out of the thermal comfort zone and were in unpleasant conditions.
