The Confucian temple of the Joseon Dynasty was a sanctuary that achieved conquest and cause through Confucianism. In other words, it was a place to confirm the status of one"s identity and the succession of one"s scholastic mantle through the worship of Confucius. However, the temple of the Japanese colonial era was different. It was a facility in which the colonial policy of appeasing the Confucian academia was involved. It also became a public venue where the principles of Confucianism blended into the public. Of course, the changes in the function of the temple had already been developed in Japan. However, while the opening of the Confucian temple in Japan was carried out for the purpose of national integration, the opening of the Hall of Great Accomplishment(Daesungjeon) in the Gyeonghakwon to the public was done with political intentions to facilitate the rule of the colony. It was a policy that emphasized the expansion of the foundation of Confucianism and the elimination of social stratification, rather than the work of the temple to establish the identity of the Confucian academia that had been unfolded until the Joseon Dynasty.
The Confucian statue was not the object of the holy Absolute or worship enshrined in the Great Temple. It had instead become an object easy to obtain for those with interests in Confucianism. Although still worshiped while maintaining the roles as traditional icons, some Confucian statues had their status converted from the subject of worship to that of appreciation as they have been mass-produced. It was consumed as a commodity with a certain monetary value. As such, the Confucian statues of the Japanese colonial period were distributed with different implications and appreciation codes from those of the Joseon Dynasty. As the historicity and sociality of the place changed, the implications of visual objects placed inside changed as well. This may be a modern sign found in the early 20th century in the Confucian temple and statue.
