In this paper I analyzed the images of King Hailing(海陵王, 1122-1161, reign 1149-1161) in historical and fictional narrative, paying attention to who created his images and why they created like these shapes. Hailing was the forth emperor of Jin dynasty(1115–1234), was called by Digunai(迪古乃) in the Jurchen language, Wanyan Liang(完顔亮) in the Chinese characters. He was born as the eldest son of Emperor Taizu Aguda(阿骨打, reign 1115-1123)’s concubine, and usurped the throne by killing the Emperor Xizong(reign 1135-1149) at the age of twenty-eight, ruled Jin empire during twelve years. His historical records were found in Jinshi(金史) “Basic Annals of Hailing(海陵本紀)” and some parts of “Ranked Biographies”. Chinese fictions about Hailing were classified into classical Chinese and vernacular fictions. The former were short stories in Wang Shizhen(王世貞)’s Yanyibian(艶異編) and Feng Menglong(馮夢龍)’s Qingshi(情史), and the latter were “King Hailing’s death for carnal desire(金海陵縱欲亡身)”(Vol.23) in Xingshihengyan(醒世恒言), “Jin Emperor Wanyan Liang’s obsceneness(金主亮荒淫)”, “Lost history of Hailing(海陵佚史)” etc.
First, if we carefully read “Basic Annals of Hailing” concentrating on political policies and actions which he had promoted after ascending the throne, we may conclude that Hialing might be a passionate ruler to have the political qualities and insight. But, historian generally described Hailing’s shape as a deceitful, brutal, and lecherous ruler through inserting unfavourable anecdotes and comments here and there. His negative images were entirely the cause of the Emperor Shizong(reign 1161-1189) to usurp the Hailing’s throne. “Basic Annals of Hailing” was written on the base of Hailing chronicles(海陵實錄), which was compiled during the Emperor Shizong rule. Shizong attempted to justify his usurping by means of describing the Hailing’s shape of tyrannical ruler in historical records. The first distortion of Hailing shape were closely related to deprived the imperial throne by Shizong and killed by his subordinates.
Second, fictions about Hailing had a common feature to be written on the base of Jinshi “Biographies of imperial concubines(后妃傳)”. It mainly dealt with Hailing’s numerous concubines, abnormal sexuality etc., also had a strong possibility of manipulated materials. Novelists in traditional China had aimed at more low educated, popular readers than historians. Novelists chose to embellish materials based on not “Basic Annals of Hailing”, but “Biographies of imperial concubines”. Therefore they brought about the result to mistake one distorted aspect of Hailing for the whole. Novelists also described the shape of Hailing as cruel tyrant to be indulged in sex with many women, like King Zhou of Shang King You of Zhou, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang etc. In addition I would like to indicate that the depiction of Hailing in fictions reflected Han Chinese’s disgust and prejudice against barbarian, for they had imaged that barbarian were brutal and immoral since a long time ago.
