The purpose of this study is to determine the meaning of Korean identity in Korean language education for overseas Koreans. In addition, it explores, from the heritage language perspective, the possibility of Korean language schools (which serve as a community for overseas Koreans) working as heritage schools for Korean language education. Korean language education for overseas Koreans strives to promote national identity, which means different things to different subpopulations due to Korea"s unique historical context. Rather than developing an identity through the Korean language as the people of a modern country, Koreans formed their identity when they had no country under Japanese occupation, by strengthening their ethnicity identifying Korean as their national language. Following liberation from Japanese occupation, a process of democratization and globalization emphasized the growth of key national aspects, and attention focused on both the identity of the Korean citizen and the definition of national identity. It was found that under this process, "nation" is perceived differently among political forces, South and North Koreans, and Koreans around the world. Therefore, the educational purpose of Korean language education (for overseas Koreans) should be established to enable reflection on individual identity beyond national identity, considering their sociocultural contexts. In addition, we need to redefine the purpose of education to help overseas Koreans produce hybrid culture in their countries of residence rather than emphasizing national identity. This study emphasized that to achieve this purpose, heritage schools should be established as systematic educational institutions for the Korean language, which is promoted as a heritage language that restores emotional ties in communities of multicultural families. To this end, the study explored the possibility of establishing Korean language schools as heritage schools by examining both the characteristics and the status of Korean language schools.
