The authors conducted speech production and perception tests of Korean monophthongs against Vietnamese learners with different learning periods of Korean. Through the analysis results of the production test, the authors looked at how accurately Vietnamese learners produced of Korean monophthongs, and how the differences in learning periods led to the production differences of each monophthong. They also conducted the perception test on the subjects who already participated in the production test to verify whether L2 learners" perception abilities improve as their experiences of L2 increase. Results of the production test and perception test, /ʌ/ monophthongs is harder to produce than other monophthongs. Therefore, there should be education to correct pronunciation. Since /o/ monophthongs that observed from perception difficulties are often mistaken with /u/, appropriate education should be provided accordingly. Overall, if there were no problems in speech production there were no significant problems in perception, as well. Vietnamese learners were also able to show that they were influenced by the native Vietnamese language when they hear and / or produce Korean monophthongs. (Kunsan National University)
