The roundhouse kick in taekwondo competitions requires sophisticated muscle coordination. This study aimed to identify the muscle coordination patterns of the roundhouse kick to understand motor control strategies of the central nervous system. In this study, we measured the electromyography of the kicking motion in adult males in their 20s. Participants repeatedly performed the round house kick 12 times each for head and waist height targets. A total of 16 electrodes were used to measure the muscle activity of both limb muscles. The measured EMG data were analyzed using the non-negative matrix factorization algorithm to analyze the muscle synergies that represent muscle coordination patterns. We also used discrimination analysis to allocate similar muscle synergies to the same clusters, thereby organizing profiles for muscle coordination patterns. As the result, the participants used two to four muscle coordination patterns during kicking. Discrimination analysis showed that the patterns were classified into 14 types. There were four types of muscle coordination patterns for each detailed movement: two in heel off, three in toe off, five in maximum knee flexion, and four in impact phases. Our findings suggest neurological principles for the control of the roundhouse kick. We expect that profile of muscle coordination patterns in the current study would be utilized in muscle fitness training or neuromuscular training to improve the performance of the roundhouse kick.
