Common squid accounts for 94% of seafood sales in Ulleungdo, South Korea. The common squid has been closely entwined with the modern history of Ulleungdo for more than 100 years; the squid is the symbol of Ulleungdo, and its catches are used as a barometer of Ulleungdo"s population change. This study examines annual and monthly fluctuations in Ulleungdo"s squid-catch data over the past 44 years (1975–2018) to investigate the natural and anthropogenic effects of changes in Ulleungdo"s squid catches. Current issues in Ulleungdo"s squid industry include overfishing by Chinese fishing vessels in North Korean waters of the East Sea, the shifting of the fishing season from early to late autumn, the reinforcement of high wind-wave alerts due to changes in the ocean condition, and the decrease in and aging of fishermen. To overcome these issues, it is vital that we seek various countermeasures that consider Ulleungdo’s economic characteristics and that these measures be reviewed at regional or national levels and be connected to related industries. Detailed countermeasures are necessary against problems at each stage of squid production, including fishing, drying, and sales. This study represents an initial attempt at reforming Ulleungdo"s squid industry and is expected to contribute policy proposals that will promote the development of Ulleungdo"s fisheries.
