Tom Stoppard’s trilogy The Coast of Utopia deals with the intense lives of the Russian intelligentsia who provided the theoretical framework of the social reformation in nineteenth-century Russia, focusing on the life of Alexander Herzen, the first socialist in Russia. Although he was influenced by the Hegelian dialectics as most of Russian intelligentsia were, Herzen had a strong conviction that history develops arbitrarily and follows no pattern but rather is influenced by the actions of the individual; history proceeds by zigzags. Stoppard reflects Herzen’s historical view, making the structure of the trilogy proceed by zigzags rather than in a straight chronology, with time-slip techniques. Furthermore, Herzen did not believe in the utopian vision which the Russian radical communists put forward as the aim of the communistic revolution. He supported the progress by peaceful steps, which caused him to be criticized by the radical communists. Stoppard makes Herzen suggest that people need to count on the flashes of personal happiness and art as a consolation in life. It is why the playwright fills the trilogy with individual and private moments of life, such as love, marriage, and the birth of a child, as well as with political and historical big ideas, and also tries a tableau vivant of Édouard Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe.
