This article examines the process of the formation of Tsushima’s self-identity, who mediates the diplomatic and trade relations of Joseon-Japan, through the key word ‘Hampei’, Vassal which performs military defence for Japan.
Tsushima scholar Amenomori Hoshu insisted on Tokugawa Shogunate that Tsushima had been the most important ‘Japanese Hanpei’ since ancient era and requested economic aid. However Mitsuyama Raika, disciple of Hoshu, criticized his argument for lack of evidence. This article examines what process his claim had taken to obtain historical evidence, through the narrative of Tsushima’s history books.
In early eighteenth century, before Raika’s criticize, Suyama Totsuan insisted that Tsushima was not ‘Hampei of Joseon’ but ‘Hampei of Japan’, being conscious of Joseon’s context. Tou Sadafusa set in his history book that Tsushima had been ‘Japanese Hampei’ since the time of mythology. In this period, Tsushima’s self-identity were mixed by Joseon and Japanese context.
In early nineteenth century, Tsushima-kiji responded Raika’s criticism and followed the frame of previous Tsushima’s history books. It wrote the ancient history of Japan and the current situation of Tokugawa era together to present the historical evidence that Tsushima has continually mediated Joseon-Japanese relations as ‘Japanese Hampei’ from ancient times to the present day. In this period, Tsushima’s history book got to separate the Joseon’s context from Japanese context. It excluded the former and positioned Tsushima as having been located in Japan since ancient times.
