Drawing on an empirical study in Melbourne, this paper examines how urban spaces are shaped and transformed over time in one of the world’s most liveable cities. It is revealed Melbourne’s urban structure exhibits strong resilience to changing environment which is the ultimate goal of sustainable design. Through an investigation on the city centre of Melbourne, the formation and transformation of streets and spaces are mapped and documented. The underpinning social, economic and political facts are used to interpret the changing and unchanging urban characters, and to fully understand the urban design or place-making process. The analysis focuses on street structure and the connections as the generators of spaces. The findings have the potentials for policy and practice innovations, and to provoke future thinking on sustainable design principles.
