Objective: We attempted to exploit passengers’ seating postures while they travel by express bus. In particular, we tried to associate patterns between passengers’ activity types and seating postures. Background: As concerns about user centered aspects in public transportation increase, more attention has been paid to passengers’ behavioral patterns and their desired emotion. In this study, we focus on passengers’ seating postures as cue to optimally related the behavioral patterns to their activity types. Method: We recruited 34 college students and recorded their posture changes while each participant conveyed eight types of activities: Sleep, Watch media, Listen to music, Use the Internet, Work, Meals and snacks, Landscape appreciation, and Read. To describe the posture change, we measured the angle changes of two joints- backrest and footrest in terms of degree. Results: In the case of the backrest, we found a noticeable difference across the activity types, and the changes were quite consistent among the participants. In the case of the footrest, however, the angle changed rather individually. Based on the observation we derived four categories of activities: Focus, Casual, Relax, and Sleep. Conclusion: Passengers are willing to adjust their sitting postures by changing the angles of backrest and footrest, and thus we can assume their desired behavior and emotion based on their postures. We distinguish the relationship thereby proposing four types of activities, such as Focus, Casual, Relax, and Sleep. Application: More advanced empirical studies are necessary though, we expect to use the results to offer more customized service or solution for the passengers in context of long-distance transportation.
