In traditional Spanish grammar, the conditional is usually explained in temporal terms: as the future in the past. However, the conditional has more important modal values that are manifested through communication, such as conjecture, attenuation, courtesy, modesty, etc. This study analyzes which of these values should be taught in the pedagogical grammar of Spanish as a foreign language (SFL) through an analysis of Nueva gramática de la lengua española and Plan curricular del Instituto Cervantes. Then, the four representative SFL textbooks are selected: Prisma continúa, Nuevo ven 2, Agencia ELE 3, and Gente hoy 2. The approach and activities of each SFL textbook are analyzed, including how the conditional form and values are presented and what activities are available for students to practice this grammatical structure. This analysis reveals that these textbooks mostly attempt to use a focus on form or an inductive approach and present various communicative activities, including the modal values of the conditional.
